A Day of Nature Journaling With ShaDeeLa...

On Saturday, June 2nd, the ShaDeeLa team took "Nature Journaling" to a whole new level. The class, led by Dee, began with a sensory exercise. Each person had the opportunity to describe an object using all the senses while the rest of the class (with their eyes closed) had to guess what it was. A great exercise to sharpen the senses and hone in our descriptive language skills.

Participants brought in their own private collection of natural objects ranging from flowers to shells, feathers and bones. The class was guided through a series of "warm-up" exercises focusing on drawing techniques, hand lettering, color application and page layout.

In the center of the room a table filled with nature books, flowers, shells, insects and bird nests offered students all the reference they could possibly imagine.

Using the techniques they learned, students created the first page of their own personal Nature Journal. With an emphasis on "personal style", students were encouraged to explore their own unique way of expression. No "cookie cutter" images here!

Personalities blossomed as we witnessed the power of personal observation unfold onto the pages. It truly opened our eyes to the beauty of nature that we at times seem to take for granted, reminding us to
stop and take time to smell the roses.
