...and they DID IT!

September's "I Can Do It" Workshop at Queen's Ink in Savage, Maryland gave us confirmation that artistic talent abounds in the hearts of those who BELIEVE. Students completed two small warm up paintings using a "negative space" technique and then moved on to a larger 16" x 20" still life painting of sunflowers. It was a fast moving class specifically designed to urge students to work spontaneously and not dwell on expectations. The results were phenomenal! Everyone left with three "ready to hang" paintings and a renewed feeling of confidence.

Hidden Talents Discovered!

ShaDeeLa's workshop on October 13th proved to be a positive affirmation for those students who may have doubted their artistic ability.

This purposely "fast paced" workshop didn't give them too much time to think and demonstrated that a direct and spontaneous approach results in a fresh and less "overworked" painting.

Layering techniques along with depth of field were emphasized. Students left with 3 warm ups and one larger "Fall Bouquet" painting.

As we all stood back and admired everyone's accomplishments, we proudly said--
 We CAN do it!!!

Take the Plunge and Push Past your Self-Imposed Limitations!

ShaDeeLa has two classes coming up that you don't want to miss. As children we were able to experience the sheer joy of creative expression with abandon. We painted, colored with crayons, played with clay and even made mud pies. We didn't care what other people thought and we did it because it fulfilled something within us. As we grew older, belief systems were formed and we began to stifle those creative urges out of fear. Fear of not conforming or being accepted. Many of us considered ourselves to be non-creative and that art and self expression was only for a chosen few. Little did we know that our inner artist still resides deep inside us and is waiting to be unleashed. "Fearless Painting" will allow you to explore and rediscover the joy of creative process without self judgment and limitations. "Journey into the Soul", a two day workshop takes you a little deeper by unlocking pent up energy that is held in the body. Gentle Yoga, breathing techniques, and music opens up the soul and allows energy to flow onto the canvas. No previous painting or yoga experience is required. Just come with an open mind and heart.

A Day of Nature Journaling With ShaDeeLa...

On Saturday, June 2nd, the ShaDeeLa team took "Nature Journaling" to a whole new level. The class, led by Dee, began with a sensory exercise. Each person had the opportunity to describe an object using all the senses while the rest of the class (with their eyes closed) had to guess what it was. A great exercise to sharpen the senses and hone in our descriptive language skills.

Participants brought in their own private collection of natural objects ranging from flowers to shells, feathers and bones. The class was guided through a series of "warm-up" exercises focusing on drawing techniques, hand lettering, color application and page layout.

In the center of the room a table filled with nature books, flowers, shells, insects and bird nests offered students all the reference they could possibly imagine.

Using the techniques they learned, students created the first page of their own personal Nature Journal. With an emphasis on "personal style", students were encouraged to explore their own unique way of expression. No "cookie cutter" images here!

Personalities blossomed as we witnessed the power of personal observation unfold onto the pages. It truly opened our eyes to the beauty of nature that we at times seem to take for granted, reminding us to
stop and take time to smell the roses.

Weekend Warrior

The rug on my porch had seen
 better days…
It was screaming to be saved…
After much research…
not really, it all came down to do I dye it or do I paint it…
I decided to go with what I know best….
Paint!

Tape the outer edges and using a brush lay down the first coat of base color.

Don’t worry about getting every nook and cranny.
Roll the second coat. Roll a third coat for extra coverage.
 Let dry overnight.

Here comes the fun…
Tape out a design or use a stencil.
Paint the second color using the same techniques as the base coat.

 Viola!

Couple of things to make your DIY project go smoothly— don’t paint on a windy day … make sure the forecast isn’t calling for rain… and use exterior semi-gloss paint, it will weather foot traffic, wine spills and mother nature.

Mixed Media Techniques Fit for a Queen

Saturday's Mixed Media Painting Discovery Workshop hosted by The Queen's Ink in Savage Mill, Maryland, proved to be yet another fabulous journey into self-expression and TRUST! Sharon set the tone initially by having everyone take a few mediative moments to let go of all their hassles and worries. She asked everyone to create the mindset that this class would be about trusting their intuition. Students were put to the test immediately as they quickly and decisively selected their paint palette consisting of three colors. It was apparent from the start that this group of women were willing to put their fears and self-doubt (about painting) aside and let their inner wisdom shine through. As each one of the 12 steps was revealed, the paintings began to take on a life of their own reflecting personal affirmations and colorful expression. Although this class was designed for artists with little or no painting experience, it was surely a testament that we all have the creative force within us that is just waiting to be released. And release it - they did! Everyone left with a "ready to hang" canvas while knowing confidently in their hearts that we are all "Queen of the Arts".

Building a Foundation...

Saturday's Mixed Media Painting Discovery Workshop was a great success and a valuable learning experience for all involved. Designed for budding artists with little or no painting experience, ShaDeeLa instructors guided them step by step on how to build a painting and trust that the end result would be a painting they would be proud to hang on their wall, students realized that this might require a leap of faith.

Based on 12 easy steps, students were able to witness the process of building a foundation and layering paint to create surface quality and focal point interest. It truly was a journey into self discovery and confidence. One student even described it as "art therapy".

As each painting unfolded and blossomed into it's final stage, it was clear that something special had happened during this class. Not only did students learn to trust their creative intuition, they confirmed to themselves that their hearts were able to open up into a beautiful expression of art.

For those who were unable attend this fabulous workshop and would like the opportunity to do so, please check our workshop page for additional Mixed Media Painting Discover Workshops.

For keeps

Saturday's workshop focused on making personal boxes for all those special treasures.

Beads made by a young child... a mother's costume jewelry... special verses...

These special tokens, combined with painting, decoupage and embossing turned a simple kraft box into a beautiful box with heartfelt memories...inside and out.
