Soul Affirmations Fabric Journal....

Once again The Queen's Ink in Savage Mill, Maryland provided the perfect gathering space for like-minded souls to meet and express their artistic abilities. Negative self-talk flew out the window and positive energy filled the room as we began to create a new language for ourselves that poured out onto soft fabric journals in the form of affirmations. Each journal was a unique expression of words, phrases and objects that resonated with each participant. The nostalgic act of sewing bits of personal ephemera felt grounding as we planted new seeds of thought that nourish the soul. This class truly touched everyone's heart and is for anyone looking for positive growth both artistically and spiritually.

Please join us on May 17th at Artistic Artifacts in Alexandria, Virginia for our next workshop. By the way, no sewing experience necessary!

Hidden Talents Discovered!

ShaDeeLa's workshop on October 13th proved to be a positive affirmation for those students who may have doubted their artistic ability.

This purposely "fast paced" workshop didn't give them too much time to think and demonstrated that a direct and spontaneous approach results in a fresh and less "overworked" painting.

Layering techniques along with depth of field were emphasized. Students left with 3 warm ups and one larger "Fall Bouquet" painting.

As we all stood back and admired everyone's accomplishments, we proudly said--
 We CAN do it!!!

Take the Plunge and Push Past your Self-Imposed Limitations!

ShaDeeLa has two classes coming up that you don't want to miss. As children we were able to experience the sheer joy of creative expression with abandon. We painted, colored with crayons, played with clay and even made mud pies. We didn't care what other people thought and we did it because it fulfilled something within us. As we grew older, belief systems were formed and we began to stifle those creative urges out of fear. Fear of not conforming or being accepted. Many of us considered ourselves to be non-creative and that art and self expression was only for a chosen few. Little did we know that our inner artist still resides deep inside us and is waiting to be unleashed. "Fearless Painting" will allow you to explore and rediscover the joy of creative process without self judgment and limitations. "Journey into the Soul", a two day workshop takes you a little deeper by unlocking pent up energy that is held in the body. Gentle Yoga, breathing techniques, and music opens up the soul and allows energy to flow onto the canvas. No previous painting or yoga experience is required. Just come with an open mind and heart.

Visit our Workshop Schedule page to register for these workshops.

Weekend Warrior

The rug on my porch had seen
 better days…
It was screaming to be saved…
After much research…
not really, it all came down to do I dye it or do I paint it…
I decided to go with what I know best….
Paint!

Tape the outer edges and using a brush lay down the first coat of base color.

Don’t worry about getting every nook and cranny.
Roll the second coat. Roll a third coat for extra coverage.
 Let dry overnight.

Here comes the fun…
Tape out a design or use a stencil.
Paint the second color using the same techniques as the base coat.

 Viola!

Couple of things to make your DIY project go smoothly— don’t paint on a windy day … make sure the forecast isn’t calling for rain… and use exterior semi-gloss paint, it will weather foot traffic, wine spills and mother nature.

Mixed Media Techniques Fit for a Queen

Saturday's Mixed Media Painting Discovery Workshop hosted by The Queen's Ink in Savage Mill, Maryland, proved to be yet another fabulous journey into self-expression and TRUST! Sharon set the tone initially by having everyone take a few mediative moments to let go of all their hassles and worries. She asked everyone to create the mindset that this class would be about trusting their intuition. Students were put to the test immediately as they quickly and decisively selected their paint palette consisting of three colors. It was apparent from the start that this group of women were willing to put their fears and self-doubt (about painting) aside and let their inner wisdom shine through. As each one of the 12 steps was revealed, the paintings began to take on a life of their own reflecting personal affirmations and colorful expression. Although this class was designed for artists with little or no painting experience, it was surely a testament that we all have the creative force within us that is just waiting to be released. And release it - they did! Everyone left with a "ready to hang" canvas while knowing confidently in their hearts that we are all "Queen of the Arts".
